Description
Prepared for the Baptist History Celebration, August 1-3, 2007.
While Primitive Baptists may be the minority in the shadow of the larger modern conventions of Baptist, they once claimed the majority of adherents in states like Illinois, Indiana, and Georgia and substantial followings in Kentucky, Tennessee, and western Virginia. By 1880 estimates of their membership approached 100,000. They are an important part of the theological history of Baptists. In the predominantly Calvinistic theology of most Baptists in the U. S. Primitive Baptists' doctrines of the church, salvation and the sovereignty of God remain unchanged.
